CBD or cannabidiol is the active compound of cannabis sativa plant that offers a lot of benefits that the patients can take advantage of. There are more and more pro CBD doctors that are prescribing this treatment, especially in the states where it is legal and allowed for medicinal use.
Since there is a huge interest for the CBD treatments, we decided to share the main advantages and disadvantages so you could know whether you like the treatment and whether it is for you or not.
It treats depression and anxiety
The depression and anxiety are frequent mental problems that a lot of people suffer from. CBD showed positive results in the treatment of these conditions since there were a lot of clinical researches that were performed. The results showed great improvement in patients who suffered from these conditions prior to the start with cannabidiol treatment.
The main cause of depression and anxiety are low levels of serotonin hormone. While CBD does not influence it directly, it does influence the chemical receptors (C1) that regulate serotonin. Therefore, it produces the effects that are the same as the ones that are produced by artificial drugs that increase the serotonin level.
The CBD also showed fantastic results in the process of treating inflammation. The molecules called eicosanoids are responsible for initiating the inflammatory response, which means that these start this painful process.
CBD does inhibits the eicosanoid enzyme called COX2 and therefore affects the cytokines, which are molecules that are responsible for leveling the inflammatory receptors. Once CBD enters the bloodstream, it attaches to these and therefore causes the reduction of inflammation and therefore the pain that was caused by this. Now, let’s mention the two main disadvantages.
Not widely available
The main disadvantage of CBD is that it is not available everywhere, mainly because of the cannabis’ illegal status as a plant. At the moment, there is only CBD-based product that was approved by FDA and it is used for the treatment of epilepsy.
Due to the illegal status, the various producers of CBD showed up. However, the problem is that these producers cannot establish a regulated production, which means that one product in every five contains THC, which is psychoactive and can get you high. Cannabidiol is safe, but due to the poor regulation may come with the side effects of THC.
It can cause dizziness or dry mouth
The most common problem of both cannabidiol and tetra-hydro-cannabidiol (THC) is that both of these can cause the popular effect called “cotton mouth”. The dry mouth is not a nice side effect and it can lead to dehydration if you do not pay attention to it. Also, in some cases, cannabidiol can cause dizziness. However, the pure CBD does not produce such effects, but rather a mix of THC that is known for such effects. Other than these two, there are no significant side effects or disadvantages that could ruin the overall treatment.
